Alright so I've tried everything, vanilla ffb, vanilla w/ fixup, NGp and NGP w/ fixup (with and without all the 'adaptive ffb' shenanigans), tweaking the NGP plugin.ini values; and the only way RBR feels enjoyable and playeble to me is without NGP, and no adaptive FFB.

Getting started with RBR & the latest mods isn't as painful as it has been in the past. Especially with wonderful tools such as RBRCIT, it's never been easier. You don't have to download a dozen+ GB of files just to try the latest cars with the latest physics. Hopefully this guide can help people discover or re-discover what RBR has to offer.

This guide aims to get straight to the point in order to get you driving as quickly as possible. If you run into any problems or were hoping for more detailed information, the /r/simrally wiki contains some more in-depth guides. If you can't find your answer there, don't be afraid to post on the subreddit. There are some knowledgable people lurking around.

Getting started with RBR & Next Generation Physics (NGP)

  1. Install Richard Burns Rally. Finding RBR may be the hardest part. Once you've found it install it to your C: drive (not in program files). For example C:RBR.

  2. Patch to v1.02. There is an official patch available here or here. If both of these links are unavailable search the internet for RBR_v102.zip.

  3. Install RBRCIT (Car Installation Tool) (click on releases for downloads). This is as simple as dropping the files into your RBR directory.

  4. Open RBRCIT.exe. It will ask you if you want to create a backup, select 'Yes'. It will then ask you if you want to extract audio.dat, select 'Yes' and wait for the dattool to do it's thing. This is the first step in modding engine sounds which you may wish to do in the future (explained further below). At this point the RBRCIT window should display.

  5. With RBRCIT open, you will want to click Download -> Update carList.ini from the menu to get the lastest car list. Then click the buttons in the lower right corner to download and install the NGP and FixUp plugins. By installing the NGP plugin you've also installed the NGP physics for the default cars, but installing other cars is easy (see the RBRCIT manuals/README). The default cars aren't the best examples of NGP and it's highly recommended to install some other cars at this point. Any of the R5 cars are my personal recommendation.

  6. Click the 'Configure' button next to the NGP plugin. This will open RichardBurnsRally.ini and allow you to configure your display resolution (XRes & YRes). You may also want to change Fullscreen to false. I also recommend changing RunIntro to false. The other options are just fine at default values. Triple monitor setups work fine as long as the desktop is seen as just one display (nVidia Surround for example). Just configure your resolution as usual. Unfortunately there are no angle adjustments for triple monitor displays.

  7. (OPTIONAL, but very highly recommended) Install the Pacenote Plugin (A.K.A. The Beast). This allows you to edit pacenotes, change your camera view/POV, and loads of other features (check the manuals/README). Installation is as simple as dropping the files into the Plugins directory in the RBR install location. Double click your left mouse button in game to open the pacenote editor, and double click your right mouse button in game to open the camera editor. If you would like to change your codriver, check out the mods by porridge & Janne.

  8. Now you can start the game. Create a profile using the name MULLIGATAWNY to unlock all cars/stages for use in Quick Rally. Then go into options and setup controls & preferences. If you need to invert any of your controls you can edit input.ini in your RBR directory (make sure it isn't set to read-only) and then restart the game. It is also recommended to backup/delete the PC_InputFilter.ini file since it is not needed and will just cause problems for modern hardware. There are some other input filter settings that you can configure through the in game menu. I recommend playing around with these especially if you have higher-end hardware (set the curves to be more linear). You should also consider lowering the steering lock of your wheel using your wheel profiler or config software before entering the game (e.g. 540º or even less). Unlike most simracing games today, there is no way to adjust this from inside the game. In RichardBurnsRally.ini, which you edited in step 6, you will see some options for adjusting force feedback sensitivity per surface and/or car. If you are struggling to get a feel for the default FFB then a combination of adjusting FFB strength (in-game option) and the sensitivity adjustments in this file should help.

  9. Once you've got your controls and preferences set up you are ready to drive! Select Quick Rally and you are good to go!

NOTE: Quick Rally will not display the names or images of the installed cars. You will have to remember which slot RBRCIT installed the car into. Here is a cheatsheet:

TROUBLESHOOTING This last step is somewhat optional but might as well be required in order to avoid a surprising number of potential issues:

  • Install the official MS DirectX Runtime.

  • Remove Pluginsrbrtestplugin.dll.

Using custom tracks

You have several options for running custom tracks but I recommend installing the RBRTM (Czech Tournaments plugin). It has a simple installer, just specify your RBR directory.

You can find custom tracks at the CZ plugin website. These also come with a simple installer. Plenty of awesome tracks there. If you wish to download all (or almost all) the tracks available at the CZ site you can download the RBR Czech TrackPack (mirror). It will also save you time installing. With all the parts in the same folder, extract to the game directory and all tracks released before the TrackPack date will be installed.

To run a custom track with the CZ plugin, in game go to: Options -> Plugins -> RBR Tournament -> Shakedown. Then you can select your car and stage. Unlike quick rally, this plugin will display the correct names of installed cars.

Racing online

If you've installed the RBRTM (CZ plugin) and custom stages as described in the section above (better with the TrackPack as it includes fixes for online play), all you've got to do to race online is create an account at the RBR CZ site. Most people use the format 'LASTNAME Firstname', because some (only a few) tournaments will require it.

Once you've got an account created you can open RichardBurnsRally.ini and edit the RBRTMSettings entry with your AutoLoginName and AutoLoginPassword. This entry will get created the first time you run RBR after installing the RBRTM plugin.

Modding sounds & effects

Changing engine sounds with RBRCIT is easy. The program has done the hardest step in modding engine sounds when it extracted audio.dat. Simply click the settings button next to a particular car and select an engine sound, then hit apply. To install more engine sounds you just drop .eng files into the AudioCars directory, and then select them through RBRCIT.

This uloz account is the a good starting point for engine sounds. They can be found in the 'RBR Czech Engine Sounds' folder, unless the uploader has changed things. You can also find engine sounds all over the internet, for example: here, here, and here. If you have an existing installation of RSRBR or some other RBR mod, you can also copy sounds from there without any problems.

Going a bit further and changing effects (turbo, transmission whine, tire noises etc) is a bit more involved and would need it's own guide. If you don't care about the details and just want some better effects there is a starter pack of effects in this post and another good pack that you can find here.

VR headset support

Install the RBRvr from kegetys. Just copy the files into your RBR directory and make sure you have SteamVR installed and setup. Once launched you can edit RBRvr options in Options -> Plugins -> RBRvr. View the RBRvr README for instructions on centering your view.

It is recommended to configure RBR to run in windowed mode and at as small of a resolution as you are comfortable with. Also you should disable any anti-aliasing and other processing. This should help increase performance.

If you have the Pacenote Plugin installed you will have to edit PluginsPacenotePacenote.ini and set enableGUI=0. You will need to set this back to 1 and disable RBRvr in order to edit/load pacenotes, but then you can change this option to 0 before going back into VR and still have the notes called correctly.

I use a generic mod enabler to switch between VR on/off. This just copies the appropriate config/plugin files to your RBR directory depending on if VR is enabled or not.
